Shula’s Steakhouse NYC

NYC Restaurant Week has come and gone. We were able to get out for three date nights during Restaurant Week. The last restaurant that we visited was Shula’s Steakhouse. I was surprised to see that Shula’s was a hotel restaurant inside of the Westin Hotel NYC. There is no where better to be for steaks than in New York City. The restaurant week menu at Shula’s had steak, chicken and fish as options but we obviously went there for steak. The atmosphere was a lot nicer than your average hotel restaurant. It has an old school NYC Steakhouse feel to it and was dimly lit making it romantic. There were some football photographs around Shula’s, if you did not know Shula’s is a chain of steakhouses owned by Hall of Fame Football Coach Don Shula.

We were seated as soon as we had entered the restaurant and the hostess was friendly and welcoming. Our waiter was over in a few minutes and took our drink orders and brought us some warm bread with in a few minutes of us being there. I was a huge fan of their sour dough bread and who doesn’t love warm bread. We had two options for appetizers. I went with the Caesar Salad with sour dough croutons and Jon had the Sea Scallops with pineapple mango salsa. They were both really yummy. The portion on the scallops was small, Jon was served one scallop but it was delicious. My caesar salad was your standard caesar salad not the best I have had but I ate every bite, which means it could not be bad right?

As I had mentioned previously there was three options for entrees but I could never go to a steakhouse and not order steak especially in New York City. We both ordered the New York Strip, with beranaise sauce, potatoes au gratin and green beans. Jon upgraded his steak size to the 16 oz but I was quite happy with 8 ozs of steak! When the steak came to the table they asked us to cut it in the middle and make sure that it was cooked to our liking before the waiter left. We both ordered medium rare and the steaks were cooked perfectly. Jon is not a cheesey potato fan so he did not enjoy the potatoes au gratin but I loved them and the green beans were just plain green beans. Not to much I can say about the green beans. My steak though was amazingly seasoned and did not disappoint this meat lover.

Shula's NYC

Being restaurant week there was obviously dessert. I was stuffed and Jon having eaten all 16 oz of steak was beyond full but we ate dessert anyways! Jon ordered the cheesecake and I had the carrot cake. I had a bite of the cheesecake and was incredible but when is cheesecake bad? My carrot cake was sooooo good and it was in a rum sauce that was a sumptuous addition to the carrot cake. It had a melted vanilla ice cream kind of quality to it and I loved it!

This being one of our last date night’s before the baby come, I am happy that we spent it at Shula’s. Right now we have 2 weekends left till baby. That means I have 2 weekends to get out there and have some romantic adult time with my husband before we are prisoners in our NYC 1 bedroom apartment! If you are thinking about visiting Shula’s Steakhouse I would totally recommend it and would return. The service and the food were both top-notch in my books! Now where are we going to go this weekend??

City Lobster NYC

IMG_3519

It is still Restaurant Week in NYC. This past week we had gone to City Lobster for our date night. We have been to City Lobster before with a Groupon and enjoyed our selves. I checked out the menu for Restaurant Week online and it looked pretty good. I made a reservation for Friday night. Upon arriving the place was disorganized chaos. The hostesses did not seem to have things under control. Even though we had a reservation we were told it would be at least another 15-20 minutes. Not something a 9 month pregnant lady wants to hear when she is already starving. Once they finally called us Jon asked the hostess if it was normally this busy to which she responded “Ugh, it’s Restaurant Week” while rolling her eyes. A great way to make us feel welcome?

Once we were seated we looked over the menu and waited for our server. The tables were so crammed together it was like we were eating with the people next to us and let’s just say they did not seem like happy people. Not that much fun for date night. When our waiter arrived Jon asked him if they had any nice virgin cocktails from the bar for me to which he just responded no. He told me soda or iced tea. It would have been nice if he could have checked with the bar to see if they could whip me up something. At this point I knew that this may not have been the best choice for our date night but was determined to have fun anyways.  We ordered our appetizers. Jon decided on the Chincoteague Bay Oysters and Crabmeat Rockefeller and I ordered the Newport Lobster Clam and Corn Chowder.

IMG_3522IMG_3523

Jon’s appetizer may not have looked very appetizing but it was pretty good. My chowder was ok, it did not seem like it was made fresh and was not seasoned very well. It required a lot of salt and crackers. I looked over at some of the other tables and their apps looked pretty good, maybe I just made the wrong choice.

We had been having a lot of trouble deciding on entrees. After asking the server about the baked lobster we both ordered it. The server had told us that it was stuffed with crab and a hollandaise sauce. Well once it arrived it had a spoon full of crab mixed with sauce just thrown on top on the shell. Was not worth the supplement price for ordering that item. The rest of the lobster was yummy but when is lobster not. We enjoyed wearing our bibs and had a good time cracking all those shells!

IMG_3525IMG_3524

Once we finished our lobsters we were eager for dessert and to make our way home. I was pretty full but who can say no to Manhattan Creme Brulee Cheesecake. Jon chose the Baked New York State Apple Crumble. My cheesecake was probably the best part of my meal. Once again Jon had dessert envy, this has happened the last couple of times we have gone out. He liked his apple crumble but not as much as my delicious cheesecake. After finishing our dessert we headed out. I wish I could say we had an amazing date night but if I had to do it over again we would have went with another restaurant. There is just so many places in NYC that there is no need to go somewhere that does not really appreciate your patronage. There are tons of places to eat lobster in the City! This week we will be eating at Shula’s Steakhouse. Watch out for the post on our date night next week!

The Standard Grill NYC

Good afternoon readers! I had the pleasure of spending a date night at The Standard Grill before the holidays. The restaurant came highly recommended by a co-worker of Jon’s. We love date nights and it had been awhile since we ventured out and tried something new. I can not say enough great things about The Standard Grill. As soon as we entered the restaurant we had incredible service.

The Standard Grill NYC

The Standard Grill has an amazing menu with so much to choose from. We decided to have the grilled calamari for an appetizer to share. The calamari was so tender and not at all chewy, just the way that we like it!

The Standard Grill NYC

Our waiter was really helpful in suggesting menu items that we might enjoy because we were having such a tough time figuring it out. There were so many option that we wanted to try! We decided to go with the special of the night which was bouillabaisse and the veal chop. I had never been a veal fan but recently I have had a few veal chops and hate to admit it but they are yummy. The bouillabaisse was served with some bread for dipping in the broth. The broth was so good we soaked it all up with the bread by the end of the meal.

The Standard Grill NYC

The dishes were so delicious that I had forgotten that I wanted to get photos until, the food was pretty much finished! I decided to still share the photos with you anyways. The veal was incredible but so was everything else on the plate. I can not even describe how tasty the roasted vegetables were that they had paired with the veal. One of my favorite thing about fall and winter is seasonal roasted vegetables. They are so easy to make and they taste outstanding. I recommend both of these dishes. We had shared them because neither one of us wanted to make a decision on who had what. I can not say enough good things about the veal. The chop was perfectly seasoned and cooked just the way I like it!

The Standard Grill NYC

I can tell you that this may have been our first dinner at The Standard Grill but it will not be our last. I promise next time that I will take photos of the food before I eat all of it! We were so full this last time that we did not get to try any of the dessert. I am sure by the taste of the entree’s that the desserts would also be out of this world. Not only was the food great but the ambiance and service were beyond my expectations. Great service is sometimes hard to find in the New York City. This would be an amazing choice for a Valentine’s Day date this year. I look forward to the next date night that we spend at The Standard Grill NYC.

Baton Rouge- Restaurant Review

Last weekend we were visiting my family in Toronto for Canadian Thanksgiving. We did a lot of running around and visiting. One afternoon in between visits we stopped in to Baton Rouge in Oakville, Ontario. My brother had recommended it to us, so we decided to give it a try!. Being that is was a holiday weekend and only 12pm, I was not to shocked that there was only one occupied table other than ours. We greeted at the door by a super friendly hostess and seated right away. Our waitress came to the table and I have to say given the immediate friendly service I knew we were not in New York anymore.

Baton Rouge Oakville

The meal started out with a virgin caesar. My favorite thing to drink in the world. I prefer a regular caesar but given the baby growing in my stomach I think vodka is out of the question for now. Virgin it is. I can not tell you enough how awesome our server was. She made me want to eat everything on the menu. This girl knows how to sell the food. We chose the lobster poutine to start off with. It was one of the best starters I have ever had! Come on a gravy made with lobster bisque! Amazing, if you ever visit Baton Rouge this is a must have!

Lobster Poutine Baton Rouge Oakville

This place is known for it’s ribs so obviously Jon had to give them a try. He liked them but said they were not as good as Virgil’s here in the city but I disagree. They had just the right amount of sauce for me. So yummy!

Ribs Baton Rouge Oakville

I had the chicken tenders meal. The chicken tenders were recommended by our server and she was spot on. Not like a lot of other places these chicken tenders are hand breaded in house. So good they almost made me forget my chicken aversion! I had them with a side house salad. Even the salad was delicious it had bacon and egg on it!

Baton Rouge Oakville

We had such a great experience at Baton Rouge. I know that this will be on our list of places to visit next time we are in Oakville. I wish I knew the servers name because this girl gave outstanding service! If you have a Baton Rouge in your area give it a try and make sure to have the lobster poutine!

Gente Ristorante NYC

Gente Ristorante NYC

We had purchased a Groupon for Gente Ristorante. It was $40 for $80 worth of food. We made a reservation for Saturday night. When we showed up I was shocked to see that there was only one other occupied table other than ours. This is never a good sign. We looked over the menu which was your regular Italian fare. We decide to share the Piatto Di Salumi for an appetizer. This is a salami plate that had bresaola, prosciutto, genoa salami, sopressata, parmigano, cornichons and fennel slaw. It arrived it was pretty standard for a salami plate nothing to special.

Gente Ristorante NYC

Considering that there was only three occupied tables the service was lackluster. Jon decided to order the lamb chops as his main. They were bland with not much seasoning. This started to be a theme at this restaurant. I love lamb so I find it hard to believe someone can make a bland lamb chop but I guess you can.

Gente Ristorante NYC

I have been really craving lasagna. I decided to give theirs a try, I had read on reviews that it was excellent. If this is excellent lasagna I would hate to see what a terrible one would be. The food was obviously not made fresh and reheated. There was a ton of salty sauce just poured all over the plate. It was not good. I will have to find some good lasagna somewhere else and soon! Plus this would be the second place I went to that weekend that had hair in the food. NYC please hair nets!!

Gente Ristorante NYC

We considered dessert but once I saw that on the menu they were brought in by a company, I was turned off. It seems the food here is just not fresh. I did not need dessert from frozen after eating my reheated lasagna dinner. There is many other Italian places in the city. Here is a review of my favorite Il Tesoro:   http://wp.me/p3wWp1-1sj   I also went there on a groupon but it was a world of difference!

Route 66 NYC

Route 66 NYC

One of our weekend rituals is to walk around 9th Ave and try to find a place to spend date night. We stumbled across Route 66, my mother in law had mentioned wanting to go there before so we gave it a shot. It is a pretty cool spot with interesting decor. For a Friday night it was not that busy and I found the wait staff was looking for things to do, which meant a lot lurking over your table.

The menu had a lot of variety. It was hard to choose they have, pastas, sandwiches, burgers, steaks, meats and so on and so on. We had a hard time choosing so we asked the waiter what was the best thing on the menu. He recommended the steaks. We decided to go with what he said and both ordered different steaks. The odd thing that you so not see in NYC very often was that everything comes with a soup or a salad. Jon thought this cheapened the place but I always like extras so I did not mind! I ordered the salad and Jon had the clam chowder.

ROute 6 NYC

Jon said the chowder was pretty good. My salad was a standard side salad with balsamic dressing. The worst part was I did find a hair in there. I normally would not have mentioned this but the hair things has happened to me many times recently. I have gone years without a hair in my food and this year I have found many. Hmmm NYC needs hairnets?

We also ordered the calamari for an appetizer. It was just ok. The marinara was pretty bland. Eatery has the best calamari in my opinion.

Route 66 NYC

For his entree Jon had the porterhouse. This is the first porterhouse I had seen in NYC that was not for 2 or more people. He said that it was tasty and grilled. It reminded him of steak you would grill on the BBQ at home. We normally share but for some reason I did not try this one so I will take his word for it!

Route 66 NYC

I had the blue cheese filet mignon, it was the special that evening. It was pretty good. Not the best blue cheese filet I have had but not many places can beat The Keg blue cheese filet. (Canadian readers will know what I mean) It was still really delicious though!

Route 66 NYC

All in all we had a good meal. I would not say it was amazing but I would check it out again and try something else next time. The service is very good and I loved the decor!

Uncle Mario’s Pizza NYC

Another great little spot in our neighborhood. We were looking for a new place to grab lunch the other day. We often just stroll down 9th Ave and find a place. We have passed my Uncle Mario’s many times, Jon is not a huge pizza fan and I was shocked when he suggested we check it out.

Uncle Mario's Pizza NYC

Uncle Mario’s is a casual little pizza point. They have a great menu of pizza’s and pasta’s available. The place was full of families, you can eat in or just grab a slice and eat it on the street. We decided to eat in, so that Jon could enjoy a cold beer.

Uncle Mario's Pizza NYC

Jon ordered the margarita personal pizza. Just like a traditional margarita pizza it had fresh mozzarella, basil and tomato sauce. The crust if thin just the way we like it!

Uncle Mario's Pizza NYC

I chose something a little less traditional Uncle Mario’s Specialty Personal Pizza. This pizza was topped with fresh mozzarella, tomato sauce, arugula, prosciutto and shaved parmesan. It was absolutely delicious. I found a new favorite topping in arugula!

Uncle Mario's Pizza NYC

Uncle Mario’s Pizza is a great little pizza joint and worth a try. I know we will stop by again!

Eatery NYC

Eatery NYC

Eatery is a restaurant that is in our neighborhood and we have been to a few times. We have had some good experiences and some bad ones at Eatery. We went the other weekend and i decided to write a review. The service is pretty good there and the staff seems to be having a great time. For an appetizer we shared some edamame and calamari. The calamari is amazing, it is served with mango and it goes together so well.

Eatery NYC

Eatery NYC

I wish I could say the same for our entree choices. Jon loves short ribs and orders them often. So it was no surprise to me when he ordered short ribs. The short ribs were not good. They had no flavor to them and we have had a lot of short ribs all over nyc, these were the worst ones. They seemed like they had just been boiled and some gravy was thrown on top. Even the mashed potatoes were bland. They need the recipe for Jon’s Short Ribs!

Eatery NYC

I had the Moroccan Salad and it was also bland and tasteless. I found that our meals just seemed like they had not been seasoned. I have had other salads at the eatery before and loved them. This one needs to be off the menu. Even the dressing was bland. It may be just my taste but I also do not like when you order salad with chicken and the chicken is stone cold. I like the chicken to be a little warm but this was straight out of the fridge. I will order something else next time.

Eatery NYC

The service was great and the atmosphere is fun but our food this time was not worth the money. We could have made much better entrees at home for much less. We will return to eatery again but next time we will stick to the stuff we know is good there. The steak is really good and I love the fish tacos. Have you ever been to a restaurant that you previously liked and been disappointed by the food??

Dinner at Il Tesoro NYC

I have already done a review on Il Tesoro  http://wp.me/p3wWp1-5s This restaurant is our favorite date night spot and the best Italian in the city. We recently returned there with a groupon that we found. It included 2 appetizers, 2 pastas and 2 entrees. This is a great deal for such an amazing restaurant.

Dinner at Il Tesoro NYCAs per usual the service was outstanding. The service is one of the things I love about this place. We have had a hard time finding great service in the city. For appetizers we both ordered the calamari. The calamari was battered perfectly and I love the marinara sauce.

Il Tesoro NYCAfter the Calamari, we moved on to the pasta course. Jon ordered the bucatini alla amatriciana, it was yummy and had a bit of a spicy kick to it.

Il tesoro NYCI chose the gnocchi sorrentina. The gnocchi had a nice tomato sauce and was topped with a little mozzarella. I would order this again. That says a lot for me since I try not to order the same things twice!

Il Tesoro NYCWe had a lot of food! After the pasta was our meat course. Jon being predictable, ordered the short ribs gnocchi which is the dish he gets every time. I have to agree with him, this is the best short ribs I have had anywhere (Other than the ones that Jon makes)!

Il Tesoro NYCFor the meat course, I decided to have Pollo Milanese, this chicken dish was delicious. I will admit this is the first time I have gone to an Italian restaurant and ordered chicken. I am so glad I did, the sauce was absolutely incredible!

Il Tesoro NYCWe were way to full for dessert this time. If I have not convinced you to check it out Il Tesoro, I am not taking good enough photos! I am going to be going back again and again!
